The Eternal Chanel Question … You Decide.

The moment is here. I am about to invest in my very first Chanel. After much prompting and, let’s face it, snarky jokes from my friend and personal fashion critic, I’m taking the plunge. Of course, the eternal question is, which fucking bag do you choose? They’re all magical. Classic flap? Or something newer, a little more Lagerfeld-y if you will. I don’t know. Here’s what I’m thinking. But as always, I’m open to suggestions. So speak up!

Miu Miu Resort 2013: Valley of the Supermodels

Chloë Sevigny may be the face of Miu Miu’s Fall 2012 campaign, but for Resort 2013, it’s all about the supermodel. Photographed by Vogue veteran Steven Meisel, Hilary Rhoda, Caroline Trentini, Jessica Stam, Karen Elson, Sung Hee, Daphne Groeneveld and Candice Swanepoel vamp in the confections of Miuccia’ Prada’s younger brainchild. Oversized bows and silk garments with childlike, large florals vie with this impressive list of models for attention, but the result is pretty rad.

Spring 2013 Makes It Rain Fall 2012

This season, more than ever before, I am convinced that what is old will always, always be new. We find innovation in those who look to the past for fashion cues and find surprising ways to reinvent trends that defined generations.

Thus I must introduce the super rad editorial ‘Purple Rain’ styled by Alexandra Fullerton and lensed by John-Paul Pietrus for Stylist Magazine.

It’s hard not to notice the drool-worthy looks in this electric story. But what’s even more note-worthy is that the looks that are coming down the runway as we (or I) speak prove that what we’re digging right now may not be trends as much as they are tried and true style patterns that will never go away. Take the looks above. The model, Polina, rocks a pair of full-on bell bottoms, much like the playful flare on a Spring 2013 look sent down Acne’s cat walk.

How ’bout the fabulous, ’70s Prada pants and jacket that had the fashion world buzzing for this fall season? Well, Peter Pilotto (bless his soul) revisited Miuccia’s genius, adding a peplum detail that keeps the look fresh.

How about good ‘ol layering? Yes ladies, that’s right, you can continue to partake in the wonderfully awkward practice of wearing pants under a full dress or skirt. Chris Benz throws patterns and textures into the mix, making sure the look stays relevant.
Earlier this week in London, Christopher Kane made sure we knew texture was alive and well. But check out that Chanel dress on Polina. If you think that the two seem to come from the same season, you wouldn’t be alone.
And of course, Alexander Wang’s slew of simple, beautifully tailored dressed for spring are plays on that classic v-neck that has become a true style staple. So while I do think that Spring 2013 is turning into the first season in a long time to consistently offer new, fresh takes on fashion — replacing the static seasons of the past few years, it’s important to remember that a trend (er, like neon, which I’m happy to say seems to be fading into the night) has very little staying power. What characterizes true fashion is a silhouette, technique or color that can speak to people across generations and circumstances.

Just a little somthin’ somethin’ to think about during the second half of fashion month. See you on the other side!

Fall Sweaters: An Ode To The Superhero

Yesterday as I stood in front of my closet, biting my lip and quite at a loss as to how one goes about packing up “summer clothes,” I decided to abandon my task and instead take a peek at all my poor sweaters that have been patiently waiting for their chance to once again hit the über chic sidewalks of NYC. Yes, I’ll admit it, I’m a sweater hoarder. But there’s something so alluring about a piece that can keep you warm, is acceptable to wear over and over and can disguise the fact that yes, you’re wearing those jeans for the third time this week.

Although my sweaters have earned themselves their very own closet, I decided it was time to scope out a new, chunky addition to my glorious collection. Which is when it struck me that so many of my favorite sweaters this season seem to have taken a cue from the good ol’ superhero. Metallics? Check. A cape that actually looks like a cape? Check. Bad ass dragonesque designs? Check.

And I mean, who doesn’t want to feel like their channeling Superwoman on a gloomy Monday morning?

Designers like Nicolas Ghesquière over at my beloved Balenciaga seem to be taking a literal approach to the notion that fashion promotes an escapist outlet for those who seek solace in style and rich, luxe fabrics.

So this season, follow the steps of those cult-classic comic heroes and fashion greats alike — after all, I’ve never met a gal who didn’t fall for a little bit of shiny goodness.
